Conception of the course of studies Global Change Management to the conference of youth of Bündnis90 / Die Grünen
Professor Spathelfand Mrs. Partzsch (2nd Sem. GCM) informed on Saturday, 16th of May on aconference of youth of "Bündnis90 / Die Grünen" about the course ofstudies 'Global Change Management' by the HNE Eberswalde (FH). The interest instudy contents of the master program was very large. Following to themeeting a detailed interview was given to the print medium "BerlinerZeitung" regarding to contents of the course of studies and to theperspectives of climate protection.
On May the 8ththe cooperative graduate program “Climate-change-proof NatureConservation: Conserving biological diversity under acceleratedenvironmental change” was launched at Potsdam University. Thecooperative graduate program aims at investigating and developingsustainable concepts and strategies which allow for modern natureconservation under rapid environmental change. Universally applicableapproaches and methods as well as regional specific applications ofclimate-change-proof nature conservation shall be developed throughintegration into supra-regional and eco-regional context.
Urban Forestry in China
ProfessorPeter Spathelf and Professor Michael Mussong discussedtogether with theMember of the Bundestag Mr. Karl-Georg Wellmann inBeijing and Chongqingabout future projects within the range of the"Urban Forestry" andsustainable forest management. During the stay inChina from 02/23/2009to 02/28/2009 they visited the Chinese Academy ofForestry, the vicemayor of the city Chongqing, the forest departmentas well as theSouthwest University Chongqing. Chongqing is the mostimportant centerin southwest China and lies in the middle range of theYangtze river.The extended city range has 31 millions inhabitants.
IFEM graduate as one of the preliminary round winner at the “Nachwuchswissenschaftlerpreis“
Ms Maria Barbara Winter, graduate of the International Bachelor Study Programme International Forest Ecosystem Management, is one of the three top favourites for the „Nachwuchswissenschaftlerpreis des Landes Brandenburg“ (young scientists’ price of the Land Brandenburg) which is endowed with 5000,- Euro. The preselection took place on October 23th, 2008 at the FH Brandenburg. Ms Winter and two further candidates in the catorgory of Bachelor Thesis were nominate dunanimously by the jury. The award of the winner price takes place on November 24th, 2008 in Potsdam.
New appointment: Honorary professor for „Ethics and policy advice“
Dr. Hartmut Ihne has been appointed as honorary professor for "Ethics and policy advice" at the HNE Eberswalde (FH). His inaugural lecture "Can we still save the world? Ethical aspects of the global change", takes place on Monday November 10, 2008 at 14:15 - 15:15 on the Waldcampus of the HNE Eberswalde (FH) (Haus 15, Alfred-Möller-Str. 1, 16225 Eberswalde).

DAAD price awarded to graduate of the Bachelor Study Programme IFEM
Eric Fee from Wisconsin (USA) received on September 26, 2008 the price of the DAAD (“Deutschen Akademischen Austauschdienstes”) for foreign students. The price endowed with1000,- Euro was given for the outstanding achievements in his studies as well as his social engagement. Eric Fee was for many years the chairman of the association HORIZONTE. He was also engaged in the project „Geographie Live“,which took place in the schools of Eberswalde.

Symposium Dendrom: Successful finish of the research project “Dendrom”
On July 10th and 11th 2008, 135 scientists, politicians, representatives of the economy and user from seven European countries met in Berlin for the presentation of the final results of the BMBF-funded cooperative research project DENDROM. Not only the question if the forests of Brandenburg can sustainably supply sufficient wood to satisfy both the material and energetic demand for wooden biomass was answered, but also all aspects of short rotation coppice (SRC) production on agricultural land as additional wood source were discussed.

New science network for Global Change research in the Carpathian mountains
The recent kick-off event on “Science for the Carpathians (S4C) Strategy Development and Networking Workshop" (27-28 May 2008, Krakow, Poland) set the first milestone for a new science network for Global Change research in the Carpathian mountains. The workshop aimed at defining the current status of Global Change research in the Carpathians at drafting a research agenda for topics relevant to the region and at establishing an active science network. The nationalities of the 72 participants showed that Carpathian research is not limited to the eight Carpathian countries, but attracts interest from research groups from many parts of the world.

Institutions of Waldcampus host congress „Forest in Climate Stress“
From April 17th until 18th, the congress “Forest in Climate Stress” has been hosted by the Universtity of Applied Sciences Eberswalde (UASE), the J. v. Thünen-Institute, the ministry of environment and the Landesforstanstalt Eberswalde. Background of the congress are the challenges on new strategies of managing forests that climate change brings up. Having been hosting the congress, the institutions of the Eberswalde Waldcampus have underlined their wish for a close collaboration in the field of climate change and to develop their image as a centre of competence.
Result of the congress is the “Eberswalder Erklärung”, a catalogue with 11 demands for ensuring the various forest functions and for enabling of a sustainable management.

Invitation to 2 nd Master’s Day 2008
April 16th, 4 p.m. H1 (Economics building)
For the second time this year an information meeting on the five master study programmes of the University of Applied Sciences Eberswalde (UASE) is going to take place on April 16th. The programme starts with a plenum at 4 p.m. in which an introduction is held by Prof. Dr. Uta Steinhardt and each of the master study programmes are presented in short. Subsequent to the plenum at about 5:10 p.m. a discussion in specific forums to each master study programme will take place. This will be a unique chance of gathering information from students as well as from study course administrators. Invited is everyone who is interested but especially students of UAES’s Bachelor programmes in all semesters.

"Global Change Management" outstanding innovative and creative project
Within the competition 'Germany - Land of Ideas' the international Master Study Programme 'Global Change Management' at the Faculty of Forest and Environment was awarded a prize for being an outstanding innovative and creative project. In a venue on February, 19th Mr. Mario Werner from Deutsche Bank handed over a certificate signed by the President of the Federal Republik of Germany, Horst Köhler, and a panel of the campaign. First Price in GTZ-Competition
Gerrit Hansen and Eric Fee, first semester students of Global Change Management, are winners of the GTZ-initiative „Between Lecture Hall and Project Work“. The competition, organized for the seventh time by GTZ, fosters transfer of knowledge between higher education and practical development work. More that 100 students from Universities and Applied Universities analyzed 63 GTZ-projects. The winning presentation was entitled “Renewable energy for rural development in Afghanistan- vulnerability and adaptation to global change processes”.

Invitation to Master’s Day 2008

On Wednesday January 16th 2008 an information meeting on the five master study programmes of Universtiy of Applied Sciences Eberswalde is going to take place on the University’s campus. The event will start with a plenum in the big lecture hall (forest campus) at 2 p.m. Content of the plenum will be a short introduction to UASE’s five master study programmes „Global Change Management“, „Forest Information Technology“, „Sustainable Tourism Management“, „Regional Development and Nature Conservation“ und „Marketing in Organic Agriculture“ as well as the topic of how to finance studying. Subsequent to the plenum a discussion in specific forums to each master study programme with students and study course administrators will take place.

UAS Eberswalde — Place of Ideas
The city of Eberswalde has been rewarded with three prices in the competition “Germany — Land of Ideas”. The International Master Study Programme “Globbal Change Management” of the University of Applied Sciences Eberswalde (UASE) received one of these prices. The price emphasizes the unique international and future oriented idea of the Master Study Course. On April 10, 2008, a interntional symposium “Sustainability and Climate Change - Educating Change Agents” is going to take place at the UASE (the programme will be announced in due time).

Global Change Management elected project of the UN-decade "education for sustainable development” by UNESCO
Appreciating its dedicated activities in the field of education for sustainable development the UNESCO elected the study programme “Global Change Management” of HNEE-Eberswalde as an “UN-decade project”. The decade, standing under the protectorate of Federal President Horst Köhler, aims for establishing the thought of an ecologically, economically and socially sustainable development of world-society within all parts of the system of education.
The award will take place as part of the “Day of the Decade” on November 27th in Stuttgart.

Public Forest Colloquium 2007/2008
The public forest colloquium 2007/2008 with topics about “Perspectives of Sustainable Forest Management/Perspektiven einer nachhaltigen Waldwirtschaft” starts on 11. October 2007. There are lectures once a week, every Thursday from 4.15 pm till 6.00 pm, in lecture hall 5, campus A.-Möller-Str. (new building on the forest campus). The initial lecture was hold by Mr. G. Dieterle from the World Bank Washington. Expert public, as well as interested citizens are welcome to join the audience!

FIT graduate rewarded with DAAD price
On the 28th of September 2007 Addo Khoranteng (Ghana) received the DAAD price endowed with 1000 Euro from the president of the University of Applied Sciences Eberswalde, Prof. Dr. W.-G. Vahrson. Honoured were Mr. Khorantengs excellent achievements in the international Master study programme Forest Information Technology, as well as his social commitment.
The price of the “Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst” (DAAD) is awarded every year to foreign graduates of Master study programmes.
Renaming into Faculty of Forest and Environment
After fifteen years of exciting development the Faculty of Forestry was renamed into Faculty of Forest and Environment on the 24th of September 2007. This event was celebrated with some lectures at the forest campus. The new name reflects the change and development of the faculty in the fields of research and teaching. In the course of internationalisation the university signed a cooperation contract with the university of Jarabacoa (Dominican Republic).

Dr. Manfred Stock appointed as professor
On the 24th of September Dr. Manfred Stock from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), one of the institutional partners of the faculty, was appointed as professor. During his inaugural lecture “Does a rainy summer disproves the predicted dryness?” he addressed actual weather phenomena and climate scenarios for Brandenburg.
