What is adaptive nature conservation under climate change?
Adaptive nature conservation under climate change reduces, supervises and/or manages unavoidable climatic changes of biological and ecological target systems regarded as worthy of protection by society. Most important challenge of adaptive nature conservation under climate change is the preservation of biodiversity, ecosystem services and associated positive feedbacks on the climatic system regarding plausible and relevant (climatic) futures.
These futures are integrated proactively and preventively in the conception and application of today's strategies. Targeted system states are not static but they have to be determined adaptively. Adaptive nature conservation under climate change acknowledges the consequences of global climate change as a central challenge for the preservation of quality of life for today's and future generations.
The Graduate Programme
The graduate programme „Adaptive Nature Conservation under Climate Change“ serves as a framework for the exchange between different research projects and offers a coordinated education of junior researchers in the field of biodiversity conservation under conditions of a rapid environmental change. The doctoral projects are carried out in close collaboration of the participating universities and institutes. Additionally doctoral students are professionally trained and have the opportunity to acquire vocational qualifications.
Worldwide ecosystems are changing dramatically as a consequence of global and regional modification of climate and landuse. Since this will lead to a change in biodiversity it has become a overarching duty of nature conservation to guard this change and to strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity of ecosystems. In 2009 the new cooperative graduate programme „Adaptive Nature Conservation under Climate Change“ was launched at Potsdam University.
The program has been established at the University of Potsdam and the University of Applied Sciences in Eberswalde to explore and develop sustainable concepts and strategies that will provide for conservation under conditions of rapid environmental change. The graduate programme is integrated in the Potsdam Graduate School (PoGS). The PoGS offers a network between the PhD and graduate programmes of all departments of Potsdam University and supports their efforts for quality assurance, and offers interdisciplinary courses.
The graduate programme is funded by Potsdam University, University of Applied Sciences Eberswalde, the Ministry for Science, Research and Culture and the Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs, Health and Families and by the European Social Fund.

International Master Study Program Global Change Management
The mission of Global Change Management (M.Sc.) is to educate specialists who are able to cope with challenges of natural resource management under global change developing goal-oriented and scienceinformed solutions. Considering Global Change Management as a new cross-sectoral challenge we strive for an adaptive, proactive and precautionary approach to natural resource management.
Research project Adaptation of governmental nature conservation management to climate change
The project Adaptation of governmental nature conservation management to climate change (2009 - 2010, optionally until 2014) aims at analysing the vulnerability of protected areas against climate change and developing options for the adaptation of their management. The project forms part of the joint research project Innovation Network for Climate Change Adaptation in Brandenburg and Berlin (INKA BB).
Multidisciplinary Master and Diploma Programme Evolution Across Scales
The principal goal of the Evolution across Scales MSc Programme is to provide students
with a higher-level research and teaching environment focused on Evolutionary Biology, Geosciences and other disciplines in the Natural Sciences. The keystone of this programme is the integration of knowledge from the subcellular molecular level across the organismic and ecosystem level to the entire geo— and biosphere.
Graduate Initiative on Ecological Modelling (UPGradE)
UPGradE is an interdisciplinary research and education programme. It deals with different ecological and evolutionary aspects of the response of populations, species, and communities to the global environmental change. UPGradE supports four PhD projects with scholarships. The projects combine recent developments in theoretical ecology as well as process-based and statistical ecological modelling.
