Material Efficiency of Wood and Renewable Recources "WOW-EFFI-NET"

Profile of the funded Project:


Since a few years there is a shortage of resources, due high growth rates several emerging countries (China, India). Thereby there is a sustained high level of resource consumption in the developed countries. This applies not only for petrochemical raw materials and ores but also for the renewable resource wood. For the renewable wood raw material there are characterized several trends that affect to the economic, ecological and socio-economic situation from.

First of all it is to differentiate whether there are countries where are wood or wood-based processing based on local raw materials or based on imports. In the United Arabian Emirates (UAE) for example only imported products are used as raw materials. There is another situation in the Republic of Iran, in India and Vietnam where domestic and also imported raw materials are used for the production.
Beside this there are other factors for example the production depth which depends on the availability of the rawmaterials.

Measured in the chain of using materials for forest products in the UAE the depth of the production is very low. On the other hand in Vietnam the situation is reverse to the UEA. There is a huge amount of raw material combined with a fully structured timber industry despite with a small consumption.

The trade relations in the sector for forest products between the countries of the MENA region and Southeast Asia are well developed. Thus, large quantities of wooden raw materials from the countries with wide forest areas where exported in the resource-poor regions for further processing.

The Southeast Asian forests are predominantly tropical or subtropical forests. The remaining areas are still decreasing despite strong global efforts. The recent measures to reduce deforestation are successful only in part. Also the forest policy pursued by India to put the own forests under protection has only a local effect. The comparatively high demand for raw materials is, for example, through imports covered from Malaysia and Indonesia.

The Indian demand takes no account of certifications with the effect of a large share of regional deforestation.
Regardless of the availability of raw materials and the production and vertical integration is standing for all countries the same challenge to a resource-and energy-efficient production. For example, a resource-efficient manufacturing of furniture, or wood-based components in the UAE is causing strong links with the Southeast Asian commodity markets with direct impact on the forest formations in this regions. This applies to the same extent to the timber industry in the countries with more available large forest resources.

For the marketing efforts were the countries of UAE (Dubai), Iran, India and Vietnam selected. This selection takes account the above-described country-specific challenges a resource-efficient production and manufacturing as well as the different raw material availability.


Profile of the network:

The town of Eberswalde on the doorsteps of the city of Berlin can look back at a long tradition of forestry and wood science research. In 1992, the University of Applied Sciences in Eberswalde was established on these grounds. With about 1,500 students and 50 academic staff it is the State of Brandenburg's smallest university of applied sciences. By now, 14 programmes have been developed which have shaped the university's profile as a place of genuine commitment to the concept of sustainable management.

It is Germany's only university which brings together different disciplines that relate to the rural area, i.e. forestry, landscape management and nature conservation, organic agriculture, wood science and technology, regional management and tourism. These attractive, partly unique programmes lure students from all over Germany and abroad to Eberswalde.

In addition to its academic and teaching successes, the University of Applied Sciences stands out for its extremely successful research projects. It is one of Germany's best universities of applied sciences with regard to receiving sponsoring monies. The university's lead project called »Renewable Energy from Forestry and Agricultural Biomass« also takes into account the overall concept of sustainability. Last but not least, the University of Applied Sciences in Eberswalde owes part of its success to numerous regional and international partners - to a network of researchers, professors and lecturers that has been constantly growing over the last years.
