With nature for mankind

DSC06653 - Arbeitskopie 2

The following pages provide an overview of the Faculty of Landscape Management and Nature Conversation. Our activities and focus in academics and research are oriented around the Faculty's guiding principle:

"With nature for mankind"

This principle is reflected in the history of the Faculty, which now spans 20 years, as well as in the topics and content addressed in the Faculty's five degree programmes and the focus of our research activities and many partnerships.

The Faculty of Landscape Management and Nature Conversation currently employs more than 60 staff members. In addition to the 17 professors, one visiting professor and academic staff, the faculty administration and the laboratory each have two staff members. Thanks to our many research projects, more than 30 other technical staff and researchers are also part of the Faculty. The Faculty has also appointed honorary professors and hires many instructors to teach classes.

In the Faculty of Landscape Management and Nature Conservation, female employees make up 43% (30 employees) of the permanent staff (female professors 32% (German average 17.4%), female academic staff 57%, female administration/laboratory 75%). The percentage of female students pursuing degrees in the Faculty has also increased steadily over the last few years (57% in 2000, 60% in 2005 and 67% in 2011). Of the 5 current junior researchers, three are female doctoral candidates.

Programmes

The Faculty of Landscape Management and Nature Conservation is one of the four faculties at the University for Sustainable Development in Eberswalde. Our Faculty, with its extensive resources, offers students different programmes of study including two bachelor's programmes and three master's programmes:

We train the decision-makers of tomorrow with expertise in:

  • biology, landscape ecology and landscape management
  • various areas of land use and
  • economics, environmental policy and social issues

The Faculty is also involved in the master's programme for Strategic Sustainability Management (MA) for working professionals.

Research

The Faculty of Landscape Management and Nature Conservation pursues research in many areas and has one of the highest ratios for third-party funding among the university's four faculties. In this way, the Faculty makes an important contribution to the University's strength in third-party fundraising - the University for Sustainable Development in Eberswalde is regularly ranked one of the top German universities of applied sciences for third-party funding.

The concept of research professors was introduced to Brandenburg's universities of applied sciences in 2008. Brandenburg is still the only state in Germany with research professors. Since 2009, the HNE Eberswalde has been allowed to appoint four research professors. Three research professors have since been working in the Faculty for Landscape Management and Nature Conservation - which is also a positive reflection of the Faculty's strength in research and its above-average third-party fundraising.
