Subproject of the Eberswalde University: Development of a process for the serial modification of resinous softwoods for the construction of organ pipes

In the present R&D project, the two cooperation partners involved will develop an innovative process for the thermal modification of pine wood, which, in the tempered state, is intended to replace the traditionally used spruce in the long term. The background to this undertaking is, on the one hand, the qualitative and quantitative decline in regional spruce wood stocks caused by climate change, and, on the other hand, the problem of the susceptibility of wooden organ components to mold in the untreated state. The thermal modification is thus aimed on the one hand at a density reduction of the pine without excessive losses of the static properties, and on the other hand at a significant increase of the natural durability against mold and other wood-destroying organisms. The influence of thermal modification on the acoustic properties of organ pipes is also part of the considerations.
