This course introduces students to the human questions in forestry through an investigation of social, economic, institutional and cultural aspects of forest management and conservation around the world. The course is also designed to provide students with a range of exercises to build their skills in research, presentations, and teamwork.

The first part of the course covers basic theory and concepts, including: forest-human interactions, property regimes, social actors in forest management and conservation, cultural perceptions of forests, forest values, and models of social forestry. Students will also conduct group research and present seminars on selected socio-economic issues and/or applications of socio-economic methods and approaches.
