Development of chemical processes to prevent artwork-damaging gas emissions from wood-based materials and implementation of new gas monitoring techniques for risk-free display and logisik of art objects - FreeWood

Subproject: Research into alkaline solutions and development of a chemical process for the selective dissolution of hemicellulose in wood-based materials

Reserch project

Works of art are sensitive to temperature, humidity and light. In addition, harmful gases, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which escape from the showcase, transport and storage materials or the objects themselves, endanger conservation. Here, suitable sensor technology does not yet exist. Especially wood cannot be used in showcases due to high emissions and there are hardly any alternatives in logistics.

In this project, a new chemical process is being developed to remove the VOC-emitting wood components. For this purpose, alkaline solutions that dissolve the hemicellulose in the wood without affecting the wood properties are being researched. The development and implementation of VOC-sensitive sensor materials as well as electrochemical VOC sensors are used to monitor the atmosphere. Furthermore, new standard materials will be developed to quantitatively measure the interactions between the treated wood, the objects and their atmosphere. The project result will be a risk-free wood material for display cases, transport and storage of art objects as well as a new gas monitoring technique.
