What is FIT?
The international Master study programme "Forest Information Technology (FIT)" is an interdisciplinary education offer with its main focus on environmental information technologies (IT) such as geographic information systems, remote sensing, database management, forest ecosystem modelling and management and landscape research. But the the majority of modules is related to IT fundamentals and forest and environment related applications of IT. This Master Programme was launched in September 2005 (start of the Winter Semester 2005/2006). FIT is accreditated in Germany by ASIIN and in Poland by PKA.
The aim of the programme
The study programme qualifies for an occupational activity in the application range of information technologies (IT) in practice and research of the forest and environmental sector. Students will be enabled to detect relevant IT application areas and to plan and to technologically promote corresponding innovation processes.
Students learn to solve complex problems based on a deepened and extended understanding of structures, processes and relationships within ecosystems, landscapes as well as within the sphere of forestry and based on a broad spectrum of scientific methods and tools for the collection, analysis, storage, visualization and communication of environmental data. Students are especially enabled to creatively apply and to adapt forestry and environment related software, to open up new application areas and to develop new application software.
The study programme is accomplished in cooperation between the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (University of Applied Sciences) (Germany) and the Warsaw University of Life Sciences (Poland).
Another distinctive feature of this programme is the partnership of the University with the internationally renowned research institution Leibniz-Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) e. V. Müncheberg. Scientists of the ZALF will contribute teaching modules specifically designed for this study programme.
- It will take place at the Eberswalde University of Applied Sciences and is characterised by impartation of basic knowledge of environmental information technologies.
- The 2nd semester will take place at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences, focuses on the impartation of continuative knowledge of environmental information technologies including specific silvicultural contents.
- Independent research project during the 3rd semester (stay at the particular university or partner institution in Germany, Poland and abroad); range of elective courses (in Eberswalde in parts together with the course of studies M.Sc. Global Change Management).
Contents and learning objectives
Environmental Information technologies such as Geographic Information Systems, Remote Sensing, Statistics, Databases, Programming, the Internet and their forest ecosystem and environment related application form the core of the taught subjects. The core modules are accompanied by selected chapters of forest and ecological disciplines.
The students ought to
- get to know the relevant concepts and methods for survey, analysis, visualisation, and communication of environmental data,
- acquire practical skills in handling common software products particularly related to spatial data, achieve critical understanding of the processes in forest ecosystems and of forest management and be able to operate information technologies creatively to describe problems and find solutions,
- develop methods for sampling environmental data and computer- and model-based assessments of the effects on forests and other ecosystems,
In this course of studies, specialists are to be trained who are able to make accessible the steadily increasing possibilities of modern information technologies in order to solve problems of the forest ecosystem research and silvicultural practice. Through the targeted methodical course content, work opportunities in the entire field of the environment are open for the graduates. This will especially be achieved by providing scientific methods and tools required for collecting, processing and communicating environmental data with emphasis on forest ecosystems. The analysis and evaluation of forest ecosystem and environmental problems in order to derive sustainable solutions based on the application of modern information technology is the main theme of this Masters course.
Upon successful completion of the programme, candidates will be awarded the degree "Master of Science" (by UASE) and optional, (if all Polish requirements are met) "Master of Science & Engineer in Forestry" (by WULS).
