What is special about the degree programme?

Requirements of forestry systems to provide a wide range of forest ecosystem functions and services are analysed from a socio-economic, forest management and innovation-system perspective. Strategies for innovation and transformation are developed for decision-making from the company level to international political agenda setting. Throughout the study programme, with help of scientific discussions, political debates, insights on policy, business and forest practices up to the student’s own transformation project, the students become familiar with tools, methods and strategies to promote innovations in the forestry sector from new wood products to political transformation processes.

Study content

Individual study contents

The programme consists of four semesters. A total of 30 ECTS shall be completed each semester, consisting of mandatory and a selection of elective modules. Further academic content like specialization modules are eligible recognized by the European Credit Transfer System. This results in a total of 120 ECTS for the master's programme FST.

Modules per semester

Future-oriented silvicultural planning and management approaches, planning, IT implementation, logistics, silviculture are part of the content of your study for future-oriented planning and management approaches.

Students can also choose modules from other forestry-specific Master's programmes for their individual specialisation, e.g.Forest Information Technology.

Economic and managerial approaches to the valuation of forests and their services. You will learn about economy-ecology-system interactions, ecological-economic ideas, bioeconomy strategies and other alternative economic concepts.

Students can also choose modules from other forestry-specific Master's programmes for their individual specialisation, e.g.Forest Information Technology.

Governance and political steering. You will learn about institutions, actors and political strategies in specific governance systems.

Innovations and potentials Transformation strategies and process modelling, innovations and socio-technical system understanding are the topics of this semester.

After graduation

Career prospects

New ways for innovation action, from new wood products to the coordination of political transformation processes, accompany the students through their studies up to their own transformation project. The study programme enables graduates to work towards a sustainable, system-based understanding of forest ecosystem management that allows for purposeful innovation conditioning.

Specialisation options

The program offers three specializations:

  • Forest Management Strategies for Ecosystem Service Provision
  • Transformation and innovation
  • Policy and economics

In order for a specialization to be recognized, the research project must be chosen in one of the three specializations and the Master's thesis must build on the content of the research project. The degree program can also be completed without a specialization.

Prospects / job profiles

You are qualified to advise companies, politics and administrations on dealing with biomass and forest ecosystem services, and to actively shape and promote their sustainable use and provision. This includes companies and decision-making bodies in the forestry and wood processing industries, the bioeconomy, environmental, climate and nature conservation. Further career opportunities can be found in "neighbouring" and "accompanying" areas, such as in (inter-)national certification organisations (e.g. PEFC, FSC, SBP), in politics and management consultancy, in international organisations (e.g. FAO, UN, GIZ), in the nature-based health and tourism sector or also in the path to self-employment as a planner and innovator. Furthermore, you are ideally qualified for a further academic career.

It is important to be able to take different perspectives and understand different actors and their motivations.

As a secondary auditor (Nebenhörer*in), you may only apply for modules offered in the respective semester. An overview of the available modules can be found here. Please note that the modules offered, including their schedules and content, are subject to change.

Students who are already enrolled at another university as main (degree-seeking) students may be admitted to Hochschule für nachhaltige Entwicklung Eberswalde (HNEE) as secondary auditors (Nebenhörer*innen), subject to available capacity. Admission requires that simultaneous enrolment at both institutions (parallel studies) is feasible and that the selected module constitutes a meaningful supplement to the student’s primary programme of study.

Secondary auditors are not members of HNEE. They may participate in examinations with the approval of the respective examiners and in accordance with the applicable examination regulations. The scope of examinations taken may not lead to the award of a degree. There is no legal entitlement to participate in examinations. Further provisions are set out in the current matriculation regulations of HNEE.

Formal applications must be submitted during the application period by post or e-mail to the Student Service Centre.

There is a fee for secondary auditoring. The amount of the fee is determined by the current fee schedules of HNEE, the AStA, and the Studierendenwerk Ost:Brandenburg.

FAQ on application and admission

If the number of applications is expected to exceed the number of available study places, the degree programme will be subject to admission restrictions (Numerus Clausus). Study places are allocated to applicants through a selection process, which involves creating several ranking lists. The average grade or waiting time of the last admitted applicant determines the admission threshold for that year.

You can find the admission thresholds for restricted degree programmes from the previous year here:
Admission thresholds for restricted degree programmes from previous years

No, you may only apply for one degree programme at our university. We encourage you to consult with us early on to determine which programme is the best fit for you. Please contact us via e-mail to arrange an appointment. Consultations are available by phone, online, or in person.

If your Fachhochschulreife (university of applied sciences entrance qualification) consists of a school-based and a practical part, you can only apply once both parts have been completed. For example, if the practical part ends after the application deadline, you will have to apply in the following year.

For applications to a master’s degree programme, we require a transcript from your university showing at least 150 ECTS credits, your current grade point average, and the expected date of graduation.

Admission, rejection, or exclusion notices are made available in the online application portal. At the same time, a notification is sent to the email address registered in your applicant account.
For restricted-admission degree programmes, the notices are usually sent out two to four weeks after the application deadline for the respective programme.
