The BÖLT Meer project aims to bring together a transdisciplinary research group in Germany to investigate the ecological and socioeconomic impacts of the geopolitical conflict in the South China Sea (SCS) on biodiversity, the trade economy, and livelihoods in the region. Using methods from the fields of ecology, economics, futurology, and sociology, BÖLT Meer examines how geopolitical tensions in the SCS affect access to resources at the micro and macro levels and how a transdisciplinary research strategy in Germany and the EU can help secure access and preserve biodiversity in the SCS.
