HNEE delegation visits partner university IKIAM in Ecuador

A delegation from the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (HNEE) visited the Universidad Regional Amazónica Ikiam in Tena, Ecuador, last week. The aim of the trip was to deepen the strategic partnership between the two universities, which have been linked by an official cooperation agreement since 2022.

The delegation was led by HNEE President Prof. Dr Matthias Barth, accompanied by Prof. Dr Britta Gossel, Head of the Graduate School and Head of study programme of the Master's study programme Sustainable Entrepreneurship and Social Innovation (SESIN), and Prof. Dr Tobias Cremer, Head of study programme of the Bachelor's study programme International Forest Ecosystem Management (IFEM).

"Our collaboration with IKIAM is an excellent example of sustainable, international university cooperation: locally anchored, globally networked and with a clear focus on shared values," emphasises Prof. Dr Matthias Barth. "This visit not only provided new impetus, but also showed how we can develop new education and research formats together."

During the trip, the existing cooperation agreement was expanded, particularly with regard to the promotion of student and staff exchanges, joint teaching formats such as service learning and team teaching as well as research visits at PhD level. The cooperation, which originally emerged from the IFEM degree programme, has been significantly expanded in recent years - including through the establishment of an economics Master's programme at IKIAM, which is closely linked to the SESIN degree programme, as well as through a successful Erasmus+ project to promote mobility.

The delegation trip took place as part of the HAW.International programme and is part of HNEE's internationalisation strategy, which specifically integrates existing networks with other partner universities such as the University of Saskatchewan in Canada and Western Colorado University in the USA.

Another highlight of the visit was a guided tour through the Ecuadorian rainforest, led by two former IFEM exchange students Leyly Mayerly Neira Cherrez and Zaida Doménica Brito Chagcha - an impressive example of the lively exchange between the universities.
