HNEE-Deutschlandstipendium
Support for commitment and performance
Since the winter semester 2011/12, Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development has supported particularly committed and high-achieving students through the HNEE Deutschlandstipendium.
This scholarship aims to give students the opportunity to realise their full potential and focus fully on their studies — regardless of their income or BAföG funding.
HNEE students can receive €300 per month for a minimum of two semesters, up to the standard duration of their degree programme. The Deutschlandstipendium is funded equally by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and private sponsors.
For more information, please visit the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) website on the Deutschlandstipendium.

Applicants & Scholarship Holders
The Deutschlandstipendium at HNE Eberswalde supports students with outstanding academic and school achievements. It is aimed at both current students and applicants who stand out due to their voluntary commitment or who face particular personal challenges — for example, caring for children or relatives, or being the first in their family to attend university.
The scholarship currently amounts to €300 per month and is funded equally by the federal government and private sponsors. It is initially awarded for one year, after which students may apply for an extension. Applications are open to both German and international students from all degree programmes, provided they are (or will be) enrolled as full-time students during the funding period and meet specific academic and engagement criteria. The Deutschlandstipendium is not based solely on academic performance — personal obstacles and social engagement also play an important role in the selection process.
Around 40 scholarships are currently awarded each year.

Information for applicants and scholarship holders
All main (degree-seeking) students enrolled in a degree programme at HNE Eberswalde during the funding period are eligible to apply. This includes students in dual study programmes and continuing education degrees, as well as those pursuing a second bachelor’s degree.
Yes, if you are enrolled at HNE Eberswalde as a main (degree-seeking) student during the funding period. Students who are only studying at HNE Eberswalde within the framework of an exchange semester (e.g. Erasmus) are not eligible to receive the Deutschlandstipendium.
Up to two-thirds of the scholarships awarded may be subject-specific. The exact number of subject-specific scholarships is published in the call for applications for each funding period. As a rule, however, at least one third of the scholarships are open to students from all subject areas.
The Deutschlandstipendien for students in all degree programmes are awarded once a year. The call for applications and the selection process take place during the winter semester, and the scholarships are awarded in the summer semester – usually for a funding period of two semesters. Scholarships are awarded subject to the availability of funds. The exact application deadlines will be published on this website from October.
The Deutschlandstipendium is primarily a merit-based scholarship. As a general rule, you should have achieved at least 20 ECTS credits per semester with an average grade of 2.4 or better. However, other factors are also taken into account, such as social or (university) political engagement, voluntary work in associations, professional experience, or personal circumstances — for example, being a single parent or caring for a relative.
If you do not meet the minimum grade or credit requirements but fulfil other criteria according to § 5 paragraph 5 of the “Statutes for the Awarding of Scholarships within the Framework of the Deutschlandstipendium to Students at HNEE”, the selection committee may consider your application in particularly well-justified exceptional cases.
Scholarships are generally awarded for two semesters, unless the standard period of study ends sooner. The maximum funding period is limited to the standard duration of the degree programme.
If you are studying under particularly challenging circumstances, an extension of the maximum funding period may be granted in accordance with § 7 paragraph 1 of the Stipendiengesetz (StipG). If this applies to you, please use the application form provided on the website and upload it, along with all required documents, via the online application portal by the application deadline.
I will complete my studies before the full two-semester funding period ends. Can I still apply?
Yes, you can apply. In this case, you would receive funding for one semester only — and no longer than the standard duration of your degree programme.
Applications must be submitted exclusively via the Mobility Online application portal. There, you will be asked to provide information about your studies, educational and professional background, and other criteria relevant to the scholarship selection process. You will also need to upload a CV (in table format), your certificate of enrolment, and, where applicable, other certificates and supporting documents.
During the application process, you will be asked to provide information about your academic and school achievements.
For students applying in their first semester, the Abitur grade (for Bachelor’s applicants) or the grade of the first undergraduate degree (for Master’s applicants) is decisive.
For students in their second semester or beyond at the time of application, academic achievements up to and including the previous summer semester are considered. With the applicant’s consent, the Scholarship Coordination Office will automatically obtain the transcript of records on a specified deadline.
As a general rule, special qualifications, voluntary work, language skills, or involvement within the university can only be considered if supported by appropriate evidence (such as certificates or official attestations). Students involved in committees should use the form titled “Proof of committee activities at HNEE.”
If you are unable to provide evidence, any special personal circumstances relating to your studies should be clearly explained.
Please note that letters of recommendation from HNEE lecturers, language certificates that were a prerequisite for admission, and professional development certificates forming part of your degree or training will not be recognised.
No, it is not possible to submit further evidence after the application deadline.
If you have already completed at least one full semester or are in your second semester at HNE Eberswalde and then change university, your scholarship will continue to be paid for one further semester (see § 8 StipG). Otherwise, the scholarship ends in the month you deregister, discontinue your studies, or change your subject area. It is possible to apply for a scholarship at your new university (see § 8 StipG).
Only complete applications submitted by the deadline will be considered. Therefore, it is essential that you meet the requirements outlined in the call for applications. A simple copy of all supporting documents is sufficient. If any application documents are not in German or English, a simple copy of an officially certified translation into German must also be included.
Once you have confirmed that all documents have been fully uploaded and submitted, you will receive a notification confirming receipt of your application.
The selection process takes place in January. All applicants are typically notified of the selection committee’s decision by email no later than mid-February.
Yes. To continue receiving funding, you must reapply in the next application round. The maximum funding period corresponds to the standard duration of your degree programme.
Exceptions are made for extensions granted for serious reasons, such as a disability, pregnancy, caring for and raising a child, or a subject-related study abroad stay. In these cases, the maximum funding period can be extended upon request.
The HNEE Deutschlandstipendien are awarded by a selection committee made up of the President, one representative from each department, the Equal Opportunities Officer, and two student representatives. Scholarships are granted based on anonymised ranking lists.
70% of the scholarships awarded by HNEE are allocated based on a weighting of the criteria ‘school or academic performance’ and ‘other performance criteria’ (e.g. voluntary commitment, committee activities, employment, vocational training, voluntary services).
30% of the scholarships awarded by HNEE are allocated based on a weighting of the criteria ‘school or academic performance’ and ‘special personal or family circumstances’ (e.g. illness, childcare, migration background, non-academic family background).
After receiving the application documents, the committee first reviews the documents and then evaluates them according to established selection criteria. The selection committee then decides on the awarding of scholarships based on anonymised proposal lists. Acceptance and rejection notifications are sent out promptly afterwards.
The Deutschlandstipendium is not counted towards BAföG. For other scholarship programmes, the type and amount of the scholarship are decisive. Students who already receive a talent- and performance-based scholarship averaging 30 euros or more per month are not eligible for the Deutschlandstipendium. You can find information about which scholarship programmes are compatible with the Deutschlandstipendium on the BMBF’s Deutschlandstipendium website.
No. The Deutschlandstipendium is generally not offset against other social benefits, such as unemployment benefit II. An exception is housing benefit, where the scholarship may be taken into account. Please note that, like other scholarships, half of the Deutschlandstipendium is considered when calculating your annual income. If you have further questions regarding scholarships and housing benefit, please contact your local housing benefit office.
Yes, the Deutschlandstipendium is also awarded during a study-integrating practical semester.
Yes, this is possible for reasons such as maternity leave, parental leave, or a DAAD-funded study abroad programme. If you resume your studies afterwards, the funding period will be extended by the length of the leave of absence (see § 7 StipG).
The BMBF provides further information and FAQs about the Deutschlandstipendium on its website.

You decide how many scholarships you would like to fund and for how long. The student also receives an additional €150 from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). All funds go directly to the scholarship holders, whom you are welcome to meet at various networking events.
What are the benefits of becoming a sponsor?
- You accompany future professionals during their studies and help to counteract the shortage of skilled workers.
- You strengthen the university – and with it, the city of Eberswalde and the surrounding region.
- You invest in education and help shape the future of our country.
- You get to know the supported students personally and help them focus fully on their studies.
- Your commitment will be recognised publicly – and of course, you will receive a donation receipt.
How do I become a sponsor?
By submitting the fully completed and hand-signed → declaration of sponsorship, you provide binding confirmation of your support as part of the HNEE Deutschlandstipendium.
