Financing Your Studies
Parental support, BAföG, scholarships or a part-time job – studying usually has to be financed from a variety of sources. On this page, you can find information on the costs of studying, BAföG, scholarships, support for high-achieving students, working during your studies, and funding opportunities for study abroad.
The Deutsche Studierendenwerk and the Studierendenwerk Ost:Brandenburg also provide overviews of possible sources of funding for your studies.

Tuition and Semester Fees
The costs of living as a student and studying are very individual and depend on various factors such as subject, age, location and type of accommodation.
Semester Fee
Students enrolled at HNE Eberswalde currently pay a semester fee of €375.80 per semester (as of the Winter Semester 2025/26). This fee typically includes:
- Enrolment or re-registration fee: €51.00
- Student services (Studierendenwerk) contribution: €100.00
- AStA (student representation) fee: €15.00
- Deutschlandsemesterticket (nationwide public transport pass for students): €208.80
- Contribution to the climate-neutral semester ticket: €1.00
Please note that additional costs (e.g. for excursions or study materials) may apply depending on the degree programme.
For students enrolled in the part-time Master’s programmes → Education - Sustainability - Transformation and → Strategic Sustainability Management — the Deutschlandsemesterticket is not available, and this portion is therefore not included in the semester fee. These programs are also subject to additional tuition fees, in accordance with the current study and examination regulations.
Cost of Living
In addition to the direct costs of study, students must also cover living expenses such as rent, utilities, insurance, food, and other day-to-day costs.
BAföG
Under certain conditions, the German government provides financial support under the Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG). Eligibility for BAföG and the amount awarded depend, for example, on nationality, age, parental income and assets, or your own earnings. As a rule, half of the funding is granted as a subsidy, and the other half as an interest-free loan.
You can use the BAföG calculator to estimate how much support you are likely to receive.
At HNEE, the Studierendenwerk Ost:Brandenburg is responsible for BAföG advice and applications..
The Studierendenwerk also provides information on the following funding options:
- Study start-up aid
- BAföG for study stays abroad in Oceania (excluding Australia) and Africa
- Educational loan
- KfW student loan for all types of study including doctoral programmes
- Hardship loan for all students to bridge financial gaps
- Emergency aid for students in acute financial distress
Working while studying
Many students work alongside their studies to help cover living expenses and gain practical experience, which can, at best, have a positive impact on their future careers. However, if you work during your studies, there are usually limits on how much you can work and earn. You can find information on the legal framework and applicable limits from the Deutsches Studierendenwerk and the Federal Employment Agency.
Make use of the university’s advisory and information services to support your job search.
Scholarships
Alongside BAföG, student loans, and educational loans, scholarships represent another pillar of student financing. A scholarship offers more than just financial support. Depending on the foundation or scholarship provider, recipients may also take part in language courses, summer schools, or other events. The contacts and networks formed there can also benefit you after graduation.
In addition to state-funded scholarships for high-achieving students, there are a large number of privately funded scholarships in Germany, including those offered by companies.
The selection criteria vary depending on the provider and may include academic achievement, social engagement, specific fields of study, or support for students in special personal circumstances.

On our page about the HNEE Deutschlandstipendium you will find information about funding and the application process.
State Scholarships for High-Achieving Students
In Germany, there are 13 Begabtenförderwerke (organisations for the promotion of high-achieving students), supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). These organisations offer both financial and non-material support to students and doctoral candidates. In addition to outstanding academic performance, they also value social and civic engagement.
Advancement Scholarship for Experienced Professionals
The Aufstiegsstipendium (advancement scholarship) supports committed students with vocational training and professional experience who are pursuing their first academic degree.
Further Education Scholarship
The Weiterbildungsstipendium (further education scholarship), offered by the SBB, is aimed at young professionals who wish to gain further qualifications after successfully completing their vocational training.
If your degree builds on your vocational training or current professional role, this scholarship may also support part-time (work-study) students under certain conditions.
Funding for Stays Abroad
If you are planning a study semester or internship abroad, various funding programmes and opportunities are available.
Comprehensive information on current funding schemes and application deadlines is available in CampusWorks.
Further Information Platforms
The privately operated platform mystipendium.de provides information about a wide range of scholarships and funding opportunities for your studies.
International students pursuing a degree at HNE Eberswalde can also find information on available funding options and suitable scholarship programmes in the DAAD scholarship database.
Support for International Students
Compared to many other countries, universities in Germany do not have funding available to provide international students with financial support for living expenses. However, scholarships are available through organisations such as the DAAD, as well as political and business-affiliated foundations. Information on the different types of scholarships and suitable offers can be found in the DAAD scholarship database. Funding conditions vary depending on the institution, and the application process is often time-consuming. Still, it may be worth the effort! Since there is no guarantee that you will receive a scholarship—or the full amount—you should ensure that you have sufficient financial resources to cover your studies in Germany before you arrive.
