Biobased Building Conference Berlin-Brandenburg on 12 December

How can building with wood in Berlin-Brandenburg be made ecologically, politically and economically sustainable? Answers to these questions will be provided by the conference Biobased Building Berlin-Brandenburg on 12 December in Potsdam, which brings together practitioners, researchers and politicians.

Bauhaus Erde, the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (HNEE) and the Natural Building Lab at TU Berlin are inviting representatives from the entire value-added chain - from forest owners and the timber industry to architecture, professional associations and politics - to discuss how regional value-added chains can be strengthened and how the transformation of the construction sector can be accelerated in a targeted manner. The focus will be on two central challenges facing the region: the sustainable development of the forestry and timber industry and the consistent implementation of true circularity in timber construction.

The conference will be opened by Dr Manja Schüle, Minister of Science, Research and Culture of the State of Brandenburg. Prof. Dr Dr h. c. mult. Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, Director General of IIASA, will give a keynote speech on the contribution of timber construction and life-cycle management to climate protection. Prof. Dr Matthias Barth, President of HNEE, will provide further impetus on transdisciplinarity as a lever for transformation.

Three pioneering research projects - ADAPT-Wald-Holz from HNEE, ReBuilt from Bauhaus Erde and B(e)Ware from TU Berlin - will present practical approaches for a regenerative resource region Berlin-Brandenburg. Further impulses from science and practice will provide an insight into current developments. Three workshops will then develop concrete recommendations for action: for the transfer of knowledge into politics, for long-term practical participation in real-world laboratories and for the establishment of regional forest-wood construction clusters.
