BRI: Publication on pangolins
Bryan Mariano and Prof. Denise Matias led a team of authors who published a scientific article reviewing the scientific literature on pangolin conservation. Ostrom's social-ecological system model serves as the conceptual and analytical basis for this review.
The research focuses on the Philippine pangolin (Manis culionensis), one of eight pangolin species still in existence worldwide, which is endemic to the Palawan Biosphere Reserve. The study shows that there have been only a limited number of scientific publications on this species to date and that research has focused primarily on the illegal wildlife trade. The authors therefore emphasise the need for a broader, interdisciplinary research agenda and increased efforts to translate research findings into practical applications.
The work is part of Bryan Mariano's ongoing doctoral research at the BRI.
