BRI: Empowering student-led exchange programmes in biosphere reserves and geoparks
A joint publication by Prof. Dr. Denise Matias (HNEE), BIOM students B. Afful and R. Donkoh, and international colleagues from Kanazawa University has been published on ScienceDirect under the title "Empowering student-led exchange programmes in biosphere reserves and geoparks: A policy framework for sustainable education in several UNESCO-designated areas". The active participation of the students underscores the close connection between research and teaching in the international Master's programme in Biosphere Reserves Management.
The open-access article presents a policy framework for student-led exchange programmes in UNESCO biosphere reserves and geoparks. It is based on experiences with transnational educational formats and highlights practical ways to strengthen education for sustainable development, intercultural dialogue and local engagement.
The publication was co-authored by Prof. Dr. Denise Matias (HNEE), BIOM students B. Afful and R. Donkoh, and international colleagues from Kanazawa University. The active participation of the students underscores the close connection between research and teaching in the international Master's programme in Biosphere Reserves Management.
A memorandum of understanding between HNEE and Kanazawa University is currently being finalised. As part of the enhanced cooperation, students from Japan are expected to visit Eberswalde from 18 to 26 March 2026. Joint workshops, excursions and exchange formats with HNEE students and lecturers are planned.
With this publication and the planned exchange activities, HNEE is strengthening its international profile in research, teaching and sustainable transformation.
