Brandenburg Forest Moorland Protection: Advice & Multiplication
In recent decades, a wide range of measures have been taken to protect the near-natural moors in Brandenburg's forests and to rewet degraded moors. However, over 90% of these moors are still drained. This research project serves to further professionalise the forest moor restoration work carried out by the Brandenburg State Forestry Agency and to address existing gaps in research.
Forest moors and their contribution to biodiversity and climate protection
The aim of the project is to ecologically characterise forest and woodland types on moorland and link them to emissions data and water balance data. In conclusion, conclusions should be drawn for good forestry practice and best practice examples should be communicated.
Scientific support for the selection of MoorFutures sites
MoorFutures are regional climate protection certificates for the voluntary offsetting of greenhouse gas emissions generated by local peatland rewetting projects. Thorough preliminary investigations are required in order to establish a project area in Brandenburg that meets the strict requirements of the MoorFutures standard. These preliminary investigations are being carried out in close cooperation between the Brandenburg Land Agency and the Moor – Grassland – Monitoring working group at the HNEE.
ProMoor – Scientific support for moorland conservation
Wet or rewetted moorland poses particular challenges for land users due to its reduced load-bearing capacity. The ProMoor moorland conservation directive offers agricultural businesses the opportunity to receive partial financing for the purchase of moorland-friendly technology. The use of this technology is being scientifically monitored by HNE Eberswalde as part of the project in order to gain insights into its possibilities and limitations as well as its effects on moorland soil.
