In the ADAPTive WALDressourcen-Management für eine zukunftsfähige HOLZwirtschaft in der Region Brandenburg-Berlin (ADAPT-Wald-Holz) project, an early-career research group is developing an adaptive forest–timber management system for the Brandenburg–Berlin region, using Scots pine as an example. The focus is on an ecosystem- and resource-conscious regional value chain, from forest management and timber supply through to timber processing.
A forest living lab will be established as part of the project to develop and simulate innovative approaches to forest management. In a second work package, existing timber harvesting and logistics concepts will be further developed, both technologically and with regard to new possibilities for data transfer and data integration. Finally, new approaches to using Scots pine timber will be developed to increase the regional value of this raw material, particularly in the construction sector. These activities will be supported by the establishment of an innovation forum involving practitioners, with the aim of transferring approaches tested in the forest living lab and across the wider timber supply and utilisation chain into practice.
The project is divided into several sub-projects:
- Potential and limitations of adaptive forest management in Brandenburg, taking into account the ecosystem services that will be required in the future
- Timber harvesting, timber logistics and data exchange concepts for the timber supply chain
- Concepts for future timber use with a view to regional resource supply
