HNEE sub-project: Analytical investigations to identify harmful gases emitted from wood and exhibits, as well as their (cross-)reactions and their effects on the exhibits, together with studies on reducing or slowing the release of these emissions.

Works of art are highly sensitive to temperature, humidity, and light. In addition, harmful gases, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), released from (wooden) display cases or from the objects themselves, pose a risk to their long-term conservation.

The project aims to develop a sustainable, climate-regulating wooden display case with integrated sensors for monitoring harmful emissions. Combined with an emission-reducing wood modification and a controlled ventilation concept, this approach is intended to ensure that exhibits can be displayed safely over the long term.
