Bio Based Boats - Developing New Composites and Manufacturing Techniques to Increase Efficiency in Sustainable Boat and Yacht Building
03/2020 - 05/2023
Project volume:190.000 EURO
Competence field:Ecology, Wood as a raw material, Wood modification
Cooperation:Practical partnership
Funding partner:State funding
In response to changing market conditions and growing demand for environmentally responsible materials, boatbuilding using wood and other bio-based materials must become more competitive with conventional methods using fossil-based plastics. Achieving this requires more efficient manufacturing processes and the development of innovative materials and material combinations.
This project aims to develop new bio-based composite materials and manufacturing techniques tailored to the needs of sustainable boatbuilding. By establishing processes suitable for serial production, the project seeks to enable more efficient construction of boats and yachts made from renewable resources. The ultimate goal is to make bio-based boats more cost-, time-, and resource-efficient to produce – and thereby accessible to a broader range of customers.

For centuries, cargo shipping relied on wind — until steamships took over. Now, once again, many projects are exploring how wind energy can be used on cargo ships. The same needs to happen in wooden boatbuilding. It’s a technique that has to be developed further. That’s what we’re working on.
