Sub-project: Developing Reproducible Material Properties for the Production of Teak Substitute Materials
01/2023 - 06/2025
Project volume:219.920 EURO
Competence field:Wood as a raw material, Wood modification
Cooperation:Practical partnership
Funding partner:State funding
To successfully manufacture thermochemically modified components for the two areas of application — boat decking and window construction — the appropriate chemical substance must first be identified, and the underlying process technology for the thermochemical modification developed in an experimental setup. This will enable the following research questions to be addressed in the future:
- How can wooden boat decks be manufactured under sustainable conditions for the European and international markets without using natural-forest teak or other substitute materials based on tropical timber?
- How can plastic and metal be replaced as frame materials in window construction with sustainably produced materials that are dimensionally stable and durable?
The challenge lies in successfully developing and implementing suitable substitutes that can replace the existing materials not only in terms of colour and texture, but above all in terms of their technical material properties. In addition to the durability required for the intended use, resistance to splintering is a crucial technical property of both the decking material and the window sections.
