CombiMod – Combining Modification Processes
10/2021 - 09/2024
Project volume:219.759 EURO
Competence field:Wood as a raw material, Wood modification
Cooperation:Composite partnership
Funding partner:State funding
In this research and development project, the four participating partners are developing a combination of thermal and chemical modification processes to enable the environmentally friendly manufacture of innovative and durable wood products without the use of wood preservatives.
The new technology is being systematically developed and established so that locally sourced timber in Vietnam and Germany can be processed into CombiMod material. The innovation lies in a thermochemical process in which the use of biopolymers reduces process-related emissions and compensates for losses in mechanical strength. The aim is to develop a technology for pre- and post-treatment, as well as new, specific formulations for different timber species and components, enabling the sustainable manufacture of wood products for outdoor use.
The sub-project “Development of COMBIMOD Processes and Treatment Formulations Based on Biopolymers” forms part of the overall project “Development of a Technology for the Production of Thermochemically Modified Timber for the Serial Production of Innovative Wood Products for Outdoor Use.”
