The Ecosystem-Based Environmental Monitoring Programme (ÖUB) was developed at HNEE in 1997 and has been carried out continuously since 1999 by staff from the Faculty of Landscape Management and Nature Conservation and the Faculty of Forestry and Environment. Its remit is to monitor the ecosystems typical of the region within Brandenburg’s biosphere reserves over the long term from a holistic, ecosystem-based perspective, and to document and assess their development. A total of 136 sites (forests/woodland, lakes, flowing waters, wetlands, grassland, arable land and kettle holes) across Brandenburg’s three biosphere reserves are currently being monitored. The ecosystem-based approach encompasses the monitoring of both abiotic components – soil and water – and biotic components – vegetation and fauna.
