The HNEE project evaluates arthropod-friendly management practices for wet peatland sites using a specially adapted flail mower. On the fields of the practice partner Naturrind Uckermark, the mowing techniques of sickle-bar, disc, and flail mowers are comparatively investigated with regard to their effects on the arthropod fauna of peatland grassland. The project is being carried out in cooperation with the agricultural machinery manufacturer Mera Rabeler GmbH & Co. KG, which is also providing financial support for the project.

We don’t just want to know which mowing technique works—we want to know which technique, under the specific conditions of wet peatland sites, is also least harmful to insect life.
