Together with our practice partners, we are investigating whether the innovative mob grazing method has potential as a climate change adaptation strategy in arable forage production. Under mob grazing, grazing cattle trample the deliberately high residual vegetation into a layer of mulch, which is intended to provide more stable soil moisture and greater yield stability during dry periods. We are testing this in a practice-integrated trial at Gut Temmen: on the approximately 15-hectare trial site, we are investigating soil and vegetation parameters under mob grazing and analysing its effects at farm level.
Under mob grazing, the herd tramples some of the grass into mulch.
The thick layer of mulch is intended to protect the soil from heat and drought and to improve soil fertility.
