The EU-funded project Incentivising Future Forest Ecosystem Services and Incomes in Europe (INTERCEDE) aims to explore the potential of market-based approaches to incentivise forest owners to manage their forests in ways that provide valuable benefits and services to society. Forest ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration, biodiversity conservation, improved water management and recreational benefits are widely desired, if not indispensable, but are not necessarily valued, particularly in monetary terms. The project therefore aims to increase the value of European forests for European citizens by identifying and expanding market-based instruments, developing policy frameworks and guidelines, and bridging the gap between high-quality research and policy and practice.
