The built environment is responsible for a significant proportion of global CO₂ emissions. In view of continued population growth and urbanisation, there is an urgent need to change construction and maintenance practices in order to combat global warming. A key element of this transformation is the shift from conventional, carbon-intensive building materials to sustainable bio-based materials such as timber and bamboo.
The ReBuilt – Transformation Pathway Towards a Regenerative Built Environment project is systematically investigating this transformation, focusing on five main areas, including the transition to bio-based materials and circular construction practices. At the global level, the supply of bio-based building materials is being assessed, while at the regional level, transition pathways towards a regenerative built environment are being developed in four selected urban regions (Thimphu/Paro, Bhutan; Cape Town, South Africa; Potsdam/Berlin, Germany; and Denpasar, Indonesia). These efforts are supported by systematic analyses, transdisciplinary learning journeys and the development of strategic roadmaps. The findings are intended to inform policy-making processes and drive the transformation towards a climate-positive and more equitable future.
