The overall aim of the project is to improve the welfare of chickens and other poultry by specifically replacing petroleum-based materials (plastics) in poultry houses with bio-based or renewable resources. To this end, different types of wood, combinations of materials and modifications, new designs, environmentally friendly coatings, and alternative bio-based resources are being investigated in fixed and mobile poultry houses, using selected housing components as examples and considering various aspects. Selected housing components are being redesigned using renewable resources, and their effects on animal welfare under real-world conditions are being investigated in greater detail.

The focus of the sub-project at the Faculty of Wood Engineering is the development of wood-based poultry-house components to improve animal welfare in poultry housing, with particular emphasis on material analysis and development and on the design of wood-based housing components.
