The optical properties of wood vary considerably and depend on the chromophoric functional groups and chromophoric systems present in the wood. There can be significant variations in colour both between different species and within a single species. As wood undergoes natural ageing, its colour changes, primarily as a result of exposure to ultraviolet (UV) and visible (Vis) light and the photo-oxidation this induces. The aim of this project is to translate key parameters into a data-based model in order to assess chemical and colour changes in wood on the basis of radiation dose. This includes analysing changes across depth profiles.
