Over the past few decades, a wide range of measures have been taken to protect near-natural peatlands in Brandenburg’s forests and to rewet degraded peatlands. However, more than 90 per cent of these peatlands remain drained. In order to further professionalise forest peatland restoration by the Brandenburg State Forestry Service and address existing research gaps relating to forest peatland restoration and adapted management of organic soils, the project covers the following areas:
- Establishment of a GIS-based data base for forest peatland conservation
- Advising and supporting foresters before and during restoration measures
- Initial establishment of monitoring for new rewetting projects
- Design and delivery of training on forest peatland conservation for foresters to support knowledge transfer
- Research into, and scientific support for, (semi-)wet management of organic soils in forests
- Public relations and networking
