Research for the world of tomorrow

At HNEE, academia, industry and society work together to find solutions to the major challenges of our time — from climate change and biodiversity loss to sustainable economic management and resilient habitats.

Within the departments of the HNEE, spaces are created where sustainable models for the future are researched, designed and tested in practice. Different scientific perspectives come together here to tackle complex issues in an interdisciplinary manner and open up new avenues for sustainable development.

One department each on the city and forest campuses forms the organisational foundation of the university. Within these departments, research and teaching are brought together in thematically linked chairs and interdisciplinary working contexts. The departments coordinate research activities, play an active role in shaping knowledge transfer and contribute to the further development of the HNEE’s academic profile.

At the same time, they create spaces for exchange, collaboration and transformation — practice-oriented, internationally networked and closely linked to the challenges of real-world environments. By combining academic excellence, social responsibility and innovative teaching, the departments ensure the visibility and sustainability of the HNEE.

The development of the department structure took place in a university-wide internal structure process.
