Department of Landscape, Society and Economy
The Department of Landscape – Society – Economy conducts interdisciplinary research into the key challenges of sustainable development. The focus is on the interactions between landscape, natural resources, social structures and economic activity. The aim is not only to understand processes of transformation, but also to play an active role in shaping them – from the sustainable use of land and water, through the protection of biodiversity, to the development of resilient regions in the context of climate change.
The research combines perspectives from the natural, social and economic sciences and ranges from fundamental analyses to application-oriented solutions. It takes place within externally funded and collaborative projects, transdisciplinary partnerships with local authorities, businesses and civil society organisations, as well as in real-world laboratories. This is complemented by expert reports, studies and the close involvement of students in ongoing research projects. The Department thus views its research as a bridge between academia and practice – with the aim of jointly advancing sustainable developments in the landscape, society and the economy.
The professorships are organised thematically according to their specialist areas; they collaborate across disciplines and promote interdisciplinary approaches in all areas of activity. The Departmental Management coordinates research, knowledge transfer and staff development, is responsible for the strategic use of resources and contributes to shaping the academic profile of the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development.
