Forest Management as a Foundation for Developing Productive, Wildfire-Resilient and Climate-Resilient Forests in Ukraine

In Ukraine, the predominant silvicultural system is the age-class forest system, which continues to be heavily regulated by forest management requirements, particularly through restrictions on thinning in young and middle-aged stands. As a result, there are shortcomings in both resource efficiency and the proactive stabilisation of forests through essential forest management interventions.

The project aims to improve the stability and growth of different forest types through forest management measures. It also seeks to establish a scientific foundation for forest management in Ukraine and to develop an initial evidence base on the effects of these measures on forest growth, timber quality, and other forest ecosystem services.

Particular attention is given to the prevention and management of landscape wildfires in Ukraine, supporting the adaptation of the country's wildfire strategy to changing conditions.
