Agroforestry systems have great potential, especially in times of climate change, to increase structural diversity in agricultural regions and have a positive effect on soil stabilisation and water retention.

Our project is investigating which methods are particularly successful in establishing young trees in agroforestry systems and how the establishment success can be increased. To this end, field trials are being carried out in cooperation with two farms in Brandenburg and the various establishment methods are being tested and analysed.

At the same time, the project aims to further develop an autonomous weeding robot so that it can be used in agroforestry systems for the most efficient weed management possible in the future.

The results of the project are intended to be a decision-making aid for agricultural businesses and show how the establishment and management of agroforestry systems can succeed in an effective and resource-saving manner.

With regard to establishment, the focus is on two questions

1. How do different root qualities (bare root, containerised, AirPot) affect the establishment success of the young trees?

2. Can the addition of mycorrhiza and/or planting gels increase the establishment success of the young trees?

Once the trial areas have been successfully planted, a field robot will be trialled together with colleagues from Zauberzeug GmbH to support weed management in combination with trained AI.
