Master of Arts extra-occupational

Strategic Sustainability Management

Sustainability plays a key role in the day-to-day operations of many organisations. In our part-time Master's programme in Strategic Sustainability Management, you will learn how to strategically develop and embed sustainability within your own organisation.
By combining scientific foundations with pracitical experience, you will build the competencies needed to initiate and guide transformation processes related to sustainability.

Shaping sustainable organisations as a change agent

Sustainable development depends on people who actively help to shape it. Our further education programme is designed for professionals and executives from the private sector, non-profit organisations, and the public sector who want to act as change agents – initiating and accompanying organisational transformation processes towards sustainability. The programme not only provides subject-specific expertise but also helps you develop process-related skills, enabling you to craft tailored sustainability strategies and systematically engage with sustainability-related change within your organisation.

The programme is designed as a modular system:
If you are looking to upskill in specific topic areas only, you can enrol in individual certificate courses at Master's level. For more information, please visit our → Qualification Overview.

Programme content

Individual study contents

In the Master's study programme Strategic Sustainability Management, we understand organisational sustainability transformation as a strategic task that significantly determines operational action. To this end, the modules teach key skills in the areas of sustainability and organisational change, which encourage holistic, interdisciplinary thinking and enable you to make and help shape professionally and ethically based directional decisions for organisations.

We teach theoretical, methodological and communicative content over three semesters, flanked by a sustainability project that enables you to transfer theory directly into your professional practice.

In the fourth semester, the Master's programme concludes with a scientific thesis.

Modules per semester

Semester 1 provides you with an overview of sustainability challenges, concepts and strategies as a basis for professional work in sustainable development. You will develop the ability to understand complex interrelationships, to classify sustainability issues and to perceive transformation as a design task.

Target knowledge is the focus of the second semester. You will learn to develop specific sustainability strategies for different types of organisations (companies, non-profit organisations, public institutions (administration/municipality) and to link them to suitable management and implementation concepts.

In the third semester, you will be taught practical implementation and transformation knowledge. This includes process and leadership skills that are central to the successful implementation of organisational change processes.

In the fourth semester, the final Master's thesis offers you a framework for the theoretical or practical consolidation of a topic of your choice. This allows you to set an individual focus for your qualification.
