The BioFinanz project analysed various alternative financing models along the organic food value chain. In this context, “alternative” refers to financing models that enable citizens to participate directly and financially in businesses within the organic sector. Examples of these community-based financing models include crowdfunding, community-supported agriculture, profit-sharing rights, citizen-owned companies and land-purchase cooperatives.

The aim of the project was to identify the characteristics, potential and challenges of the individual financing models and to present these in a practical and accessible way.

The focus was, among other things, on the motivations and objectives of the companies raising capital and of the investors and supporters, as well as on the factors contributing to the success of the financing models.
