The aim of the project is to establish an interdisciplinary innovation group of early-career researchers and a practitioner network with methodological living labs in the Berlin-Brandenburg region, focusing on “4D point clouds and AI-based methods for developing digital twins of vegetation stands for use in integrated forest management”. Vegetation stands are captured as 4D point clouds; that is, repeated surveys of vegetation stands extend 3D point clouds by adding a fourth, temporal dimension. Innovative AI methods are being developed to automatically derive key object parameters from these 4D point clouds. The methods for deriving object parameters from 4D point clouds developed as part of the project can be used continuously under changing climatic conditions and can also be methodologically transferred to other sectors of the bioeconomy.

The project coordinator is Prof. Dr Jürgen Döllner of the Joint Digita Engineering Faculty of the University of Potsdam and the Hasso Plattner Institute (DEF-UP-HPI). The University of Potsdam is responsible for project management. Scientific project coordination is provided by Dr Rico Dichter of Point Cloud Technology GmbH.

The joint project will promote digitalisation and sustainable development in and for the region in the future.
