This joint project involving 24 farms, businesses and associations developed value chains and established lasting structures for organic vegetable production in the capital region during the project period from 2018 to 2022.
The starting point was the limited role of organic vegetable and potato production in Brandenburg, despite the clear opportunities for regional farms and downstream stages of the value chain arising from demand for regional produce. There were various reasons for this, including a lack of expertise and advisory structures, limited market transparency, and inadequate infrastructure for storage and processing. The operational group Organic Vegetables from Brandenburg addressed these challenges by working collaboratively to develop regional value chains for organic vegetables and organic potatoes. This organisational innovation enabled farms interested in diversification and young farmers to enter organic vegetable and potato production with reduced risk. It also sustainably unlocked existing value-creation potential for established farms and downstream stages of the value chain.
